A suspect in a Coral Springs “bank jugging” investigation died in a Hallandale Beach waterway Friday while fleeing deputies, authorities said.
The suspect, whose name and gender were not made public, was found dead in the water in the 100 block of Southwest 10th Avenue, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
A second target of the law enforcement investigation was taken into custody without incident Friday, authorities said. That person’s name was not immediately made public, and criminal charges had not been announced as of Friday night.
The search for the suspects began after a “law enforcement operation emanating from the Coral Springs Police Department involving bank jugging suspects was underway,” BSO said in a press release Friday.
According to investigators, bank jugging is when criminals target and steal money from bank customers. They watch people entering and leaving banks. When the criminals believe a customer has left with cash, they follow the customer to the next location.
The criminals then either take the money by force or burglarize the victim’s car to get the unattended cash.
At some point during their bank jugging investigation, the Coral Springs Police Department requested help from BSO because the suspects were outside of Coral Springs, deputies said in the press release.
“During an attempt to apprehend the targets of the investigation while in Hallandale Beach, two adult males fled from law enforcement,” the release states. “One individual was taken into custody without incident, while the other individual fled into a body of water. The individual was later found deceased in the water.”
Additional information was not immediately made public Friday.
