(Xavier Edwards Hits For the Cycle)
Former North Broward Prep star Xavier Edwards had a historic day on Sunday, launching his first career home run and hitting for the cycle.
“I don’t think it has set in yet that I got my first homer to start the game and then got to cap it off with a single,” Edwards said. “I would have been pretty upset with myself if I didn’t hit a single. I usually spray a lot of singles.“
Edwards, a 2018 graduate from North Broward Prep, hit his home run to lead off the game against Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers. Edwards hit only two home runs as a senior at NbP and 14 in the minor leagues before going deep for the first time as a big leaguer.
In his second plate appearance, Edwards walked and doubled in the fifth. Two innings later, he hit his first career triple before recording an infield single in the ninth to become only the second player in Marlins history to hit for the cycle.
“I knew he was going to be pretty good at the plate, but I didn’t know he would be this good,” Manager Skip Schumaker said. “You ride the highs as long as you can. I am really excited because he is a good kid, works hard, and is proud of what he has done with the opportunity.”
The Marlins lost 6-2, but Edwards is hitting .379 on the season. The Marlins are 39-67 on the season and will head to Tampa for their next series.
