Coconut Creek Commissioner Rallies Against Proposed Monarch Hill Landfill Expansion

Members of the Coconut Creek Commission continue fighting against an effort to expand the Monarch Hill landfill near the city.

The Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County executive committee met on July 26 to continue discussing efforts to promote the landfill’s expansion.

Commissioner Joshua Rydell spoke during the public comments period in opposition to the County’s draft ordinance for the Agricultural—Disposal A-6 District, which includes an increase in landfill height from 225 feet to 325 feet.

“The Solid Waste Authority needs to send a letter to the county asking them to wait on deciding until the master plan is completed,” he said.

According to the June 28 committee meeting minutes, executive director Todd Storti wants a multi-phased approach to promoting the authority’s goals. This would include defining the authority’s goals and message and working with the County’s public information officers to educate the community about critical issues.

According to Storti, a second phase would involve educating the community about organic processing and standardized residential recycling processes. The third phase would involve public education and working with community partners to disseminate information in the master plan.
