The weather played a big factor, but some teams were able to compete at Monarch High School with the return of one the top wide receivers in the country.
The football team’s game against Coral Springs High School was pushed back four days, but they went on to win 52-0. Jack Spaeder completed nine passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns, while Florentino Lopez also played and threw for a touchdown and 154 yards. Jabari Brady returned to the Knights with five catches for 190 yards. Bre’lan Mareus had four carries for 60 yards.
Monarch went on to play Chaminade Madonna High School, the fourth-ranked team in the state, on Saturday but fell 37-8.
Next, the Knights will play another tough game against the nation’s ninth-best team, St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The Raiders also rank second in the state and are 5-1 this year, with their only loss coming against Bishop Gorman High School.
The Knights also had a player commit this week, with Jeden Ryder selecting Beloit College in Wisconsin. He says committing to a school that wants him feels perfect.
“It felt like home the second I learned about it,” Ryder said. “It’s great with the amount of money I’d receive for a scholarship, my connection to people already attending the school, and the education I’d get from the school.”
Ryder began playing football during his freshman year at Coral Glades before transferring to Monarch during his sophomore year. He played on the offensive line and participated in back-to-back District Championships. Last year, he helped the Knights win their first Regional Title in school history.’
The junior varsity team improved to 3-2 this year following a 36-0 win over Blanche Ely High School. They also had wins this season against Boyd H. Anderson and Marjory Stoneman Douglas while falling to Coral Glades and St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
The Knights will play Deerfield Beach High School in their next game on Thursday, October 16, before closing the regular season with a matchup against Coconut Creek High School a week later.
The golf team competed in their last match against Pompano Beach High School, with Ethan Weiss leading the way with a 44. Mason Weiner finished second with a 50, followed by Brodie Ward, Scott Greenland, Shane Ferrell, and Ty Herbster. They were back in action again on Tuesday and were led again by Weiss with a 45. Weiner finished with a 50 ahead of Ferrell, Herbster, Ward, and Sebastian Flores.
The girls’ volleyball team picked up one of their biggest wins of the season against Hollywood Hills High School. including their biggest win in five sets in the seniors’ final home match. The four seniors for the Knights are Adrianna River, Amanda Gray, Jaylyn Brown, and Alina Natal. The Knights won 25-18, 25-20, 12-25, 19-25, and 15-13 for their third victory.
Monarch also won against Deerfield Beach High School during the regular season and will play South Broward and Miramar High School to close out the regular season, which will be the final home matches with Adrianna River, Amanda Gray, Jaylyn Brown, and Alina Natal.
