The Monarch High School wrestling team has certainly started the 2022-23 season strong.
Head Troy Yarbrough said they are starting to garner more interest in the sport as the season progresses, and the numbers are increasing,
“Now that middle school wrestling has finally begun in Broward County, we are looking forward to getting those younger kids in the room so they hit the ground running during their freshman year.”
Freshman standout Rosie Klien placed 2nd in the 100-pound weight class at the Palmetto Ridge Lady Bear Invite in Naples. Sophomore Payton Moyer also placed 2nd in the 190-pound weight class at the Palmetto Ridge Lady Bear Invite, while first-year wrestler Sebastian Cardozo has accumulated an 11-1 record thus far. He placed 3rd in the 160-pound weight class at the Coral Springs Invitational.
Second-year wrestler Kii Stephenson has a record of 9-3 and also placed third in the 152-pound weight class at the Coral Springs Invitational. Senior, Marvin Cyriac, a star on the varsity football team, has a record of 7-4. He placed fourth in the 285-pound weight class at the Coral Springs Invitational.
“The team is very good, and the energy they bring is great,” Cyriac said. “I love my team whether we win or lose this year. It has been a slow start having an injury derail my first half of the season, but I’m hoping to get back on track.”
Monarch will compete in a tournament at Suncoast High School on Saturday, Jan. 21, before the Broward County Championships on Jan. 28.
