Coconut Creek and Monarch High School were back in action this week for a busy sports week on the field and court.
Coconut Creek High School recorded a 7-0 win over Mimiar High School on Friday night to improve to 3-3 this year. The Cougars scored the lone touchdown in the second quarter and pitched their third shutout of the season. Next, Coconut Creek will play Blanche Ely High School on Friday, October 25, at 7 p.m. These two teams met last year, with the Cougars recording a 26-7 victory.
The Monarch High School football team continued its tough stretch of games, facing St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Friday night. The Raiders came in as the fifth-ranked team in the state and ninth in the country and proved that with a 44-6 win.
The Knights are now 4-3 this year and will play another tough game on Thursday against Piper High School on Thursday, October 24, at 7 p.m. The Bengals did not allow a point through their first four games. The Knights won 32-6 in their only matchup last season, but the Tigers are 5-2 this year.
The Coconut Creek girls’ volleyball team, which only won two matches during the regular season, reached the final after a bye in the first round and a win over Atlantic High School in the Semifinals. They fell against Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School in the final after beating Stranahan and Coral Springs High School during the regular season.
Monarch High School fell in their opening match of the District Tournament against Coral Glades 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. The Lady Knights were seeded fifth after beating Deerfield Beach, J.P. Taravella, Hollywood Hills, and South Broward High School earlier this year.
Both schools also had their cross-country team race in the BCAA Championship on Thursday at Markham Park with Ahmad Hasan, Brian Colquhoun, Ahmad Hasan, and Sanaa Glenn. At the Middle School level, The Lyons Creek Middle School girls soccer team had their incredible season end on Tuesday, falling to Westglades Middle School 4-0.
Lyons Creek won the Division Championship and their first playoff game against William Dandy Middle School before being eliminated. Their cross-country team also competed at Markham Park on Thursday, finishing 16th. Corbin Thomas had the best time, followed by Elijah Lewis, Enrique Garcia, Donte Thomas, Donals Garcia, and Camden Metott. The girls team only ran individually, and Thania Silva finished with the top time, along with Ja’Meria Griffin, Dessarayne Sesti Starr, Niah Antoine, and Sophia Ortega.
