Matchbox restaurant at Sawgrass Mills was ordered shut down by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation following an inspection that uncovered multiple health code violations, including insect activity.
According to June 19 inspection records, inspectors found small flying insects throughout the restaurant, including in open liquor bottles behind the downstairs bar, on food preparation surfaces, clean dishware, and storage containers.
Records also show that the bar area, which is open to the main dining room, has been the subject of repeated warnings for its vulnerability to pests. A June 19 inspection report listed 15 total violations, including multiple stop-sale orders for food held at improper temperatures. Items such as vodka sauce, cooked ribs, sliced cheese, and deviled eggs were found sitting well above the safe cold-holding threshold of 41°F.
Matchbox has a history of similar violations. Records show the restaurant was previously shut down for insect issues on March 15, and had received pest-related warnings on November 3, 2023, May 16, 2024, and November 4, 2024.
A follow-up inspection on June 20 showed improvement, but still documented the presence of live insects in various areas.
As of now, it is unclear when Matchbox will be cleared to reopen.
