Following an inspection that uncovered a range of violations, including a live roach infestation, a restaurant in Coral Springs has been mandated to close its doors.
On August 11, health inspectors from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation ordered the closure and cessation of services at Jersey Mike’s Subs, at 4230 North State Road 7, in response to the discovery of a substantial roach infestation and numerous violations during a routine inspection.
Records of the inspection show that eight violations were discovered, including those involving live and dead roaches found throughout the premises.
Inspectors note in the report that roaches were discovered behind a two-drawer reach-in cooler on the back cook line, inside the vent area of another two-drawer unit, between a triple sink, and the wall in the handwashing area.
Roach excrement and droppings were identified as well. Inspectors noted in the report an accumulation of roach excrement inside the vent area of a two-door reach-in cooler and on the ground under the unit.
Food safety issues were also flagged in the report, with specific highlights dedicated to items soiled with food debris, mold-like substance, or slime. The report also noted that the same substances were found near soda nozzles and the service drink station in the dining room.
Inadequate water pressure at a hand wash sink was also identified, noting the pressure is not strong enough for employees to wash their hands properly.
The inspection also revealed Jersey Mike’s failed to provide proof of required state-approved employee training for its staff members and that there was no evidence that food employees were informed of their responsibility to report information about their health and activities related to foodborne illnesses to the person in charge.
Responding to these violations, inspectors ordered Jersey Milke’s closed until the necessary corrective measures were taken and the restaurant was deemed safe for operation.
