A 25-year-old Coral Springs man charged with a hate crime for slashing a pro-Israel banner will have the case against him dropped in exchange for his completion of a court intervention program, records show.
Nour Eldeen Ashraf Abaido was charged with criminal mischief with a hate crime enhancement for allegedly slashing the banner displayed at Bagel Time Cafe in Miami Beach on Oct. 28, 2023, police said.
Abaido allegedly walked up to the business and unsuccessfully tried to remove the banner – which read “Bagel Time proudly stands with Israel” – then slashed it with a sharp object, causing about $400 in damages, police said.
According to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, the cafe’s owner approved Abaido’s enrollment in a year-long pre-trial intervention program after meeting with detectives.
Abaido, who has no felony record, paid $400 in restitution at the time of his enrollment to cover the cost of replacing the damaged banner, prosecutors said.
He spent several days in jail before his release on bail and spent several months under house arrest.
As part of the intervention program’s conditions, Abaido must stay away from Bagel Time Cafe and its owner, as well as Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers.
He is barred from owning or possessing a firearm while in the program, must serve 100 hours of community service, and must write a letter of apology to the victim, prosecutors said.
If Abaido completes the program’s conditions, and after one full year of enrollment, the case against him will be disposed of by the court.
In criminal justice records and State Attorney’s Office files, the case would be recorded and reflected as a hate crime that was not pursued by prosecutors upon completion of an intervention program, authorities said.
