Lamborghini Getaway Car Leads Police to Suspects in Sawgrass Mills Luxury Shoplifting Spree

A luxury-store shoplifting spree at Sawgrass Mills Mall ended with two Baltimore brothers under arrest and a stolen Gucci backpack recovered from a Lamborghini, according to Sunrise police.

According to Sunrise Police Department arrest reports, Morris Powell, 34, and Norris Mace Powell, 31, were arrested on June 13 after officers responded to Gucci at Sawgrass Mills following a reported theft.

Investigators said store employees reported that two men entered Gucci and worked together to steal a black Gucci backpack valued at $1,785. Surveillance footage allegedly showed one man distracting an employee by asking to see merchandise while the other took the Gucci backpack and fled the store without payment.

Police said the pair fled toward the Orange Parking Garage, prompting a search of the area. Officers quickly located Morris Powell near the garage and later found Norris Powell nearby.

Although neither man was initially found carrying the backpack, officers discovered a Lamborghini parked near the garage. Looking through the vehicle’s windows, police reported seeing a Gucci backpack matching the stolen item sitting in the second row.

Using keys allegedly found on Morris Powell, officers entered the vehicle and recovered the bag, which still had its security sensor attached. Gucci employees later identified it as the backpack that had been taken from the store.

The investigation uncovered additional alleged crimes. Police said Morris Powell discarded a pink Balenciaga handbag under a vehicle when officers approached. The handbag was later determined to have been stolen from another luxury retailer at Sawgrass Mills.

Norris Powell was charged with retail theft for coordinating with another person.

Morris Powell faces multiple charges, including grand theft, organized retail theft, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, tampering with evidence, and resisting an officer without violence.

Both men were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
