Dive into water safety at a special public education event hosted by the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department. The event aims to arm residents with essential safety skills ahead of the summer swimming season.
“With the frequency of accidental drownings in Broward County, it’s critical to host free community-wide events that emphasize the importance of water safety,” said Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department Chief Michael McNally.
The Water Safety Day takes place on Saturday, May 18, at Mullins Pool from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free admission to the event will provide an opportunity for participants of all ages to engage in a variety of activities designed both to educate and entertain.
Certified lifeguards will conduct interactive demonstrations, while informal sessions will allow attendees to practice CPR and First Aid techniques and local representatives will distribute Water Smart Broward Swim coupons for free-to-low-cost swim lessons available at local pools.
Residents can also learn about safety precautions for residential pools and other bodies of water.
Adding a splash of fun, the event will feature open swimming sessions, music, water-based games, and opportunities to win prizes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for 1- to 4-year-old children. Each year, nearly 300 children under age 5 drown in swimming pools.
McNally added, “As we head into the summer season, we hope the community will take the skills learned at this event to be safer in and around the water. Our goal is always to prevent a potential tragedy.”
Mullins Pool is located at 10180 NW 29th Street.
