Traffic homicide detectives are probing a crash involving a Tamarac driver that left a 13-year-old boy dead in North Lauderdale.
The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. Thursday in the 7900 block of West McNab Road, where a 2015 Mercedes Benz sedan driven by Sarah Vieira, 27, of Tamarac, was heading east in the center thru lane, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
At the same time, the 13-year-old boy was riding on a standup electric scooter, heading west in the eastbound lanes of West McNab Road.
According to a BSO press release, Vieira “did not realize the scooter was traveling toward her until it was directly in front of her vehicle.”
Vieira attempted to avoid the crash but the teen “rode into the front passenger side of the Mercedes” and was thrown east on West McNab Road, coming to rest in the center thru lane, the release states.
The teen, whose name was not made public, was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Vieira remained at the scene after the crash and was cooperative with investigators, authorities said.
Neither excessive speed nor impairment are believed to be factors in the crash, according to BSO.
