While the rain caused a lot of devastation in some parts of the county, students from Big Blue Marble Academy in Coral Springs enjoyed the inclement weather last week.
The rain and puddles in the outdoor play area did not stop the toddlers, who all donned raincoats and giant umbrellas, from a walk. Center Director Cindy Sotelo said the outing allowed kids and teachers to discuss what causes the rain and how it works.
The academy, which accepts kids from six weeks to age four, is known for its curriculum, which includes languages, service learning, and mindfulness. Sotelo said in anticipation of Earth Day on April 22, the children did other activities that taught them about the environment and sustainability.
“The kids grew green peppers from seeds. They cut the top off a few green peppers and placed them in soil, and months later, out came healthy green peppers,” she said, adding that a group of two-year-olds had a chance to put on the superhero recycling capes this week.
“They ‘flew’ all around the campus picking up trash,” Sotelo said. Three-year-old students got special blue buckets to help clean up.
Sotelo added that one of the main goals of the academy is supporting kids on their journey to become caring, compassionate, and responsible members of their community.
