The City of Coconut Creek has announced the launch of a new co-ed instructional basketball league designed for children aged 5 to 6. The program aims to introduce the basics of basketball in a non-competitive environment, focusing on skill development and enjoyment of the game.
The program, which will start on July 20, includes ten regular practice sessions paired with games and four additional skill-building clinics.
All activities are set to take place on Saturdays. Each session combines a 40-minute practice followed by a 20-minute game, divided into four- to five-minute quarters. Notably, the games will be coach-refereed, and no scores will be kept, emphasizing learning and teamwork over competition.
The league is open to children who are five years old by September 1, 2024, and not turning seven before September 30, 2024. It will run through October 26, with breaks on August 31 and October 12. The clinics and games will all be held at the Recreation Complex located at 4455 Sol Press Boulevard.
The registration fee includes a jersey, shorts, and a basketball. Fees are $120 for Coconut Creek residents and $170 for non-residents, payable by credit card only.
Registration is available online via the city’s WebTrac system or by walk-in at the Recreation Complex or the Community Center at 1100 Lyons Road. Interested parties are encouraged to register between April 15 and June 29, though the dates may adjust depending on registration volumes.
The program also calls for volunteer coaches. Those interested in coaching are invited to email the league at CreekSportsGirlsBBall@CoconutCreek.net. Further details about the league and registration can be obtained by contacting the Recreation Complex at 954-956-1580 or visiting the city’s parks website.
