The J.P. Taravella baseball team began their season with a win against South Broward High School on Tuesday night for their first victory.
The Trojans beat the Bulldogs 9-2 behind a strong game in the first inning. After E.J. Burns led the game off with a hit, Anthony Quigley hit a two-run home run to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. JPT tacked on two more before Tyler Morgan recorded a two-run double to make it 6-0.
Burns and Mikael Ghann also added RBIs while Jonathan Lopez made the start, allowing only one hit and striking out four. South Broward scored two off sort James Lacey before Burns went on to pitch two innings, while the Trojans added on before Ghann recorded the final three outs.
“It was nice to jump out early and take a 6-0 lead, but the great teams keep the pedal to the metal and put teams away,” Head Coach Joe Giummule said.
JPT is coming off another strong season where they reached Regionals and played well during their annual trip to Key West, going 1-0-1. They will play Deerfield Beach High School in their next game on Thursday, December 22, at 4:30 p.m. and four more on the road before playing in their home opener on March 6 against Pembroke Pines Charter.
