The city commission recognized nine veterans and active duty service members who participated in the Hometown Heroes Banner program at their Monday, March 1, meeting.
The Hometown Heroes Banner program was started in 2021 to recognize Coral Springs community members who served or are serving in the armed forces.
According to the city, each service member will have a banner displayed along Freedom Lane, which extends along University Drive from Royal Palm Boulevard to Ramblewood Drive.
Banners are displayed for about three months. When the city takes the banners down, they are available for pickup at City Hall.
Eligible military branches for the program include the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Marines, Space Force, and National Guard-Active Reserves.
The commission previously honored ten hometown heroes at their December 7 meeting.
The recent hometown heroes honorees include Alexander Thornberry, Army; Frank Sorells, Jr., Air Force; Tony Spina, Navy; Laurence Kravitz, Army; Dylan Lukaszewicz, Army; Joseph Hugh, Marines; Juan Pablo Afanador, Marines; Dominic Boddie, Navy; and Kyle Croatti, Navy.

Thornberry, Sorells, Jr., and Spina retrieved their banners at Wednesday’s meeting.
In his remarks, Spina, a member of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, discussed his experience in the Vietnam War.
The coalition, he said, will be honoring the service members who were killed in Vietnam by bringing The Moving Wall to Coral Springs in May. It is a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The city and the veterans’ coalition will be cosponsoring the initiative.
“We have a lot of people that protect and defend our country and have done so over time, and for us, it’s very important to say ‘thank you,'” said Mayor Scott Brook.
