Police are warning Coconut Creek residents to stay alert to scams after a woman in her 90s fell victim to a gift card con.
According to Coconut Creek Police, scam artists used an email to scare the woman, telling her an iCloud payment had failed. Next, they said her social security number was “compromised,” and she had a warrant out for her arrest.
Police said the woman grew afraid, and the scammers told her they could fix her problem. She followed their instructions to buy several gift cards and give them the card numbers.
The scammers got away with the information, and police are investigating the crime.
“Remember that any time you’re asked to buy gift cards to supposedly fix some type of problem, it’s always a scam,” police wrote in a Facebook post.
