Two men were arrested after allegedly using a blowtorch to rob a fellow passenger on a Broward Transit bus.
According to Margate Police Department records, the incident took place on August 22. It began when two men, later identified as Cedric Key, 38, and Roberson Dormevil, 30, of Tamarac, were on a bus traveling northbound on North State Road 7.
Records show the bus stopped at 800 North State Road 7, where the suspects and the victim exited the bus.
Margate Police reports show the victim alleged that Dormevil approached him and asked to use his cell phone. When the victim refused, Dormevil reportedly snatched the phone from his hand and fled into the Lakewood Mall parking lot with Key.
The victim told officers he followed, asking for the return of his phone, to which Dormevil responded by taking out a blowtorch, igniting it repeatedly, and pointing it toward the victim in a threatening manner.
The arrest reports alleged that the victim saw Key putting on Dormevil’s sweater, which contained the stolen cellphone.
The victim seemed out of options without a phone to call 911, but fortunately, Margate Police officers were close by. Records show the victim approached officers yelling, “They just robbed me,” and pointed toward the men, who were seen looking back as they walked through the plaza.
Officers quickly detained both men at the 5500 block of West Atlantic Boulevard. During an interview with the men, the victim conducted a “show-up” identification to confirm the suspects’ involvement, and a search revealed the victim’s phone in Key’s front pocket.
Both men were arrested, charged with robbery by sudden snatching, and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Key, who is currently on probation for manslaughter, faces additional charges for violating his probation.
Both men remain in custody.
