Devin Barreiro {BSO}
A Hialeah teen is facing 10 criminal charges after Sunrise police say he and another man shot up to 20 people with a BB gun while driving through a Walmart parking lot.
According to Sunrise police, Devin Barreiro, 18, was arrested June 22 following the incidents at the Walmart at 12555 W. Sunrise Blvd. Investigators allege Barreiro and a co-defendant drove through the parking lot multiple times, firing BBs at pedestrians from the passenger-side window.
The report shows officers initially responded after receiving reports of someone shooting people with a BB gun. When they arrived, they were flagged down by five victims who said they had been struck by BBs while walking through or near the parking lot.
One victim told police she was hit three times, once in the leg, buttocks, and face. Investigators said the BB that struck her face broke the skin, causing a laceration that could leave a permanent scar.
Witnesses described a white Honda Civic, leading officers to stop a vehicle matching that description later that evening. During the traffic stop, police said they found a Daisy pump-action BB rifle in the back seat along with copper BB pellets. Investigators noted the rifle is capable of firing projectiles at more than 350 feet per second, fast enough to cause serious bodily injury.
After being detained, Barreiro allegedly told investigators that he and another man went to Walmart three separate times that day to buy fishing lures and shoot people with the BB rifle.
Police said Barreiro admitted owning the rifle and estimated they shot between 15 and 20 people. The co-defendant also allegedly admitted the pair targeted shoppers, telling detectives one person drove while the other fired from the passenger-side window.
In a separate victim’s case, investigators said Barreiro later admitted his co-defendant instructed him to lower the vehicle’s window so the passenger could fire at people from the moving car.
The co-defendant is named in the case, but there is currently no record of his arrest.
Barreiro was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
