High School Student Arrested for Armed Robbery: Chaotic OfferUp Transaction Ends in Stolen Gold Chain

A Piper High School student faces armed robbery charges with a firearm after he and another man allegedly ambushed and stole a gold chain during an in-person OfferUp transaction.

According to the arrest report, on April 19, the victim met with a man, later identified as Jonathan Andres Barbecho, 18, of North Lauderdale, in the parking lot just outside the Tijuana Taxi restaurant at 901 North University Drive.

The victim told the Coral Springs Police Department he had arranged to meet an individual named “Christian Teri” through the online marketplace OfferUp to sell a gold Cuban link necklace valued at over $4,100. Upon his arrival, he was approached by Barbeco.

According to the victim, the sequence of events that transpired escalated from the victim first allowing Barbecho to try on the necklace to, shortly after that, an unknown Black male joining the fray, making a FaceTime call to show off the necklace, and causing general chaos to a tense situation.

The victim told officers that during the Facetime call, the unknown male unexpectedly assaulted him, and the unknown man and Barbecho fled on foot with his necklace still in their possession.

The report shows the victim and his friend that accompanied him to the botched deal gave chase, but that Barbecho and the male managed to reach a vehicle parked near the 990 block of North University Drive. The victim told officers as he and his friend approached the car, the driver pointed a handgun at them, forcing them to run in fear for their lives.

Following the robbery, the victim reported the crime to law enforcement and provided a detailed description of Barbecho and his unidentified accomplice. He also provided screenshots of the conversation between himself and the buyer, “Christian Teri” before the OfferUp account was deactivated.

With ample evidence, including surveillance video of the robbery, CSPD opened an investigation featuring coordination with both OfferUp and Google.

The data led to subscriber information for the suspect’s account, revealing the owner as a student at Saint Paul Academy, whose image matched the profile picture associated with “Christian Teri.”

Further investigation and interviews conducted with the Broward County School Board and Piper High School identified Barbecho as the man seen on surveillance footage taken from the crime scene. The school’s athletic director also identified Barbecho and told officers he had recently been kicked off the school’s basketball team.

On May 10, CSPD obtained a search warrant for Barbecho’s phone number, which was registered with T-Mobile. He was apprehended, arrested, and transported to the Broward County Main Jail a day later.
