Bogus Officer Busted After Posing as Injured Deputy in 911 Call

A man who has a history of impersonating law enforcement officers has been charged with a felony after falsely reporting himself as an injured Broward County Sheriff’s deputy during a 911 call.

On August 22, the Margate Police Department responded to a 911 medical call near the 1400 block of Northwest 62nd Terrace in which the caller identified themselves as an injured law enforcement officer.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man in distress, later identified as Kurtz Methelus, 24, of Margate, who repeatedly claimed to officers and emergency medical personnel on the scene that he was employed with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Pompano Beach division and insisted that his superior had his information on file.

While en route to the hospital for medical evaluation, the report shows that Methelus allegedly repeated his claims about being affiliated with BSO and, unprompted, expressed his intent to purchase a bullet-proof vest upon release.

The eventual arrest report shows Methelus has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency, local or otherwise, and that, according to public records, this isn’t the first instance of Methelus impersonating law enforcement.

Law enforcement reportedly recognized Methelus from an August 21 incident in which he allegedly entered Manny’s Bakery at 1027 North State Road 7 wearing an empty bulletproof chest plate carrier and identified himself to customers and staff as a BSO officer.

According to records, Methelus has a history of repeatedly claiming to be a law enforcement officer, not only to bystanders but also directly to officers. Records show that he has made patrons and business owners uncomfortable after entering various establishments while wearing a Kevlar vest.

As a precaution, Methelus was transported to HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital in Tamarac for an evaluation. Still, even during his visit, he reportedly continued to identify himself as a sheriff or police officer.

Methelus was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail following medical clearance.
