J.P. Taravella High School students have a unique opportunity to earn college credits through the Navy JROTC program.
This year, JROTC has partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to offer two dual enrollment courses, allowing students to earn six hours of college credits.
The first course is Introduction to Aeronautical Science, and the second is Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, where students can learn about drones.
Kevin Follett, senior naval science instructor at J.P. Taravella, aims to establish an aviation pilot’s ground school through Embry-Riddle in 2025. Students who complete this course can take the Federal Aviation Administration private pilot written examination.
Follett wants to grow NJROTC and offer students more opportunities. “Last year, we had 87 cadets, and this year we have 130. My goal is to have 175 cadets,” he said.
The NJROTC program offers students leadership training and technology courses, preparing them for future challenges. The students also engage in exercise and drill activities, fostering a sense of discipline and teamwork.
According to Follett, an essential goal of NJROTC is to promote good citizenship among high school students, instilling in them a sense of responsibility and service.
