A student from Dave Thomas Education Center is facing robbery charges for allegedly planning and carrying out a robbery of a fellow student in the school’s men’s bathroom.
According to Coconut Creek Police Department records, the robbery, led by a student later identified as Benson Joseph, 18, of Coral Springs, and several other students, reportedly took place on October 21 at 4690 Coconut Creek Pkwy.
Records show the students followed the victim, a fellow student, into the restroom, where Joseph approached him from behind and placed him in a rear-neck chokehold, instructing others to “grab the money” from the victim’s pocket.
The victim told CCPD officers that $1,320 in $20 bills — totaling 66 bills — fell to the ground during the scuffle. He said multiple students, including Joseph, scrambled to pick up the scattered cash.
According to the police report, school security told officers they were alerted to the situation and had apprehended Joseph shortly after the incident. When searched, Joseph was found to have $120 in $20 bills in his possession.
According to the arrest report, Joseph reportedly told school security, “He can have it back,” during the investigation.
After the victim informed officers that Joseph was the student who orchestrated the robbery and put him in a chokehold, he was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Benson was later released after posting a $2,500 bond.
