Coral Glades Basketball and Soccer Teams Face Mixed Fortunes in Recent Matchup

Coral Glades had a busy afternoon of athletics on Tuesday as basketball season began and the soccer teams faced Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

The girls basketball team fell by 52 points against a strong Piper High School team after going 5-12 last year.

The boys basketball team played Piper in their fourth game of the year and recorded a 66-49 win. Dylan Burrowes finished the game with 12 points and 20 rebounds, while David Darling added 16 with five three-pointers. Anthony Valdes and Tahir Bond combined for 31 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds.

Head Coach Stefan Whittingham felt that a few key players and the defense stepping up were critical to the win.

“Dylan’s rebounding, David’s shooting, Anthony’s playmaking, and Tahir’s overall great play allowed us to be successful, Whittingham said. “We are still a step late defensively right now, but we are already better offensively than we were last year, which is such a positive because last year we struggled offensively a lot at times.”

They followed that up with a win against Deerfield Beach High School to move to 3-1. They will be in action again along with the girls on Monday, December 4, against Fort Lauderdale High School starting at 6 p.m.

The girls soccer team dropped their first game of the season in a matchup against the Eagles 7-0. The Jaguars started the season 3-0-1 before losing to the same team that knocked them out of the postseason last year.

The boys soccer team had a 2-2 draw against Marjory Stoneman Douglas and is now 3-1-2 this year. Marvin Fredric and Oscar Perez scored goals for the Jaguars.

Head Coach Marc Lyon felt like it was a decent result, considering they had to play a man down in the second half.

“I felt that we were the better team throughout the game, especially after going down to 10 men and creating better opportunities to win the game late on, including hitting the post, Lyon said. “Still, a very long way to go to get to where we want to get to, but I’m happy with the fight that our team had.”

Both teams responded with shutout wins on Thursday against Deerfield Beach High School and will face J.P. Taravella in their next game on Monday, December 4, starting at 5 p.m.
