Joshua Rydell Appointed to Broward Solid Waste Authority, Vows to Oppose Landfill Expansion

The Coconut Creek Commission selected Joshua Rydell to serve as a delegate for the city on the Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County during the June 13 meeting.

Commissioner Rydell replaces Mayor Sandra Welch, who was selected to serve as an alternate. He asked the commission to choose him and said he would fight for the city’s interests in their effort to prevent further development of the Monarch Hill landfill.

“I want to be the delegate,” said Rydell. “This is our biggest concern for Coconut Creek residents. I believe I would be the most effective voice.”

According to Rydell, the Broward Commission is creating an ordinance to increase the landfill’s height. Rydell said he met with county commissioners and was told they would likely support the height increase. He promised to oppose this.

Commissioner John Brodie said he respected Welch’s work as a delegate but believed Rydell would advocate more effectively for the city.

Welch said she would love to continue serving as the delegate, but if the commission wanted Rydell, she would support the decision.

Welch said everyone on the city commission should learn about the Monarch Hill situation and work to advocate for Coconut Creek on the landfill issue.
