A Coconut Creek man recently fell victim to a scammer on Instagram who tried to extort him after he sent the scammer explicit photos, authorities said.
The victim, who was single, met a person he “thought was an attractive woman” on Instagram, according to a Coconut Creek Police Facebook post.
“One thing led to another, and he sent ‘her’ some pictures he shouldn’t have,” police wrote.
A short time later, a man called the victim, demanding money. The man said he would release the pictures to all the victim’s Instagram contacts if the money was not paid, police said.
“Being a victim of this [kind of scam] can be even more embarrassing than falling for a more typical scam,” police wrote.
Police warned the public to be wary of social media contacts with strangers and of sending materials to someone they have never met.
The investigation into the scam is ongoing, and no arrests have been made, according to Coconut Creek Police spokesman Scotty Leamon.
