Lucille’s American Café, a longtime staple for Sunrise residents known for its cozy 1940s-style diner atmosphere and scratch-made comfort food, will close its doors at the end of August, the owners announced this week.

“Have you heard the news? We are announcing the closing of Lucille’s American Café in Weston at the end of August,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “Please come see us during our last three weeks and enjoy your comfort food favorites made from scratch with lots of love. It has been our greatest pleasure serving the community since 1999. Thank you for your loyal patronage; you have become part of our Lucille’s family.”

Since opening Lucille’s in Weston in 1999, owners Paul and Beth Nunez have welcomed diners into what felt like an extension of their own family kitchen. The restaurant at  2250 Weston Rd. built its reputation on hearty blue-plate specials, a signature Black Angus Burger, and recipes inspired by the Nunezes’ mothers and grandmothers.

Paul and Beth met in the 1990s while attending FIU and majoring in hospitality management. Over the next decade, they married, had two children, and, in 1999, created a restaurant concept fueled by their passion for home-cooked classic dishes made with love.

Every dish at Lucille’s is made from scratch with locally-sourced ingredients, served in a setting filled with nostalgic touches and warm hospitality.

Lucille’s motto, “Sharing The Stories That Unite Us,” reflected its role as a gathering spot where neighbors connected over meals and memories. Over the years, generations of Sunrise residents marked birthdays, anniversaries, and countless breakfasts at the diner.

On social media, the owners said they had not been able to secure a fair rent deal. They also cited the high percentage that meal delivery apps like Uber Eats take from food orders made on their platforms.

The Nunezes invited customers to stop by before their final day of business to enjoy their favorite dishes one last time.

“We’re proud to have been part of your memories,” they wrote.

Lucille’s has a second location in Winter Haven.
