A Tamarac woman was arrested on drug possession and misusing 911 charges after making multiple false reports to law enforcement of an active shooter.
On May 20, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to multiple emergency calls about a shooting in the area of 6005 Northwest 71st Avenue.
According to the BSO report, the caller, later identified as Elizabeth Torres, 51, of Tamarac, told deputies she was in the area of a shooting in progress and described herself as a Hispanic female with brunette hair in a ponytail, wearing a red shirt and purple leggings and riding a black bicycle.
The report claims deputies had interacted with Torres earlier that day regarding a hit-and-run incident she had reported. However, they were unable to locate the incident.
En route to the location, deputies verified that Torres’s phone number was the one from which the calls were made. Upon arriving at the 6200 block of University Drive, they encountered Torres heading south on her bicycle.
According to the BSO report, after detaining her, Torres admitted to calling 911 and asked if that was why she was being arrested.
A mobile carrier check confirmed that Torres had made three emergency calls, each time reporting a shooter but refusing to provide further details and hanging up on dispatch.
Deputies called the phone number on the scene, which rang Torres’ phone, confirming her as the caller. No other calls about a shooting had been received, and a thorough check of the area revealed no evidence of such an incident.
During a search during her arrest, deputies found a glass pipe in Torres’ red fanny pack, along with her Florida driver’s license and two Visa debit cards. The glass pipe tested positive for cocaine.
Torres was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
