Help a dog and make a difference: high school students can get extra service hours for fostering dogs from Broward County Animal Care.
Attiyya Atkins, spokesperson for the organization, said the shelter typically gives up to 80 hours of volunteer service credit to students if they foster a pet.
“This weekend, high school students can earn a hundred community service hours when they pick up any dog for a 30-day foster,” she said, adding that the limited-time special is offered to help the shelter’s overcapacity issue: Broward County Animal Care now has 149 dogs, while it can comfortably house 106.
Atkins said that while a shelter isn’t the ideal place for a dog or cat, the staff provides care and comfort to all the animals. When the county facility is over-capacity, the employees must work extremely hard to tend to all pets.
“This is a great opportunity for high school students to have a meaningful impact in the community and help alleviate the kennel stress that the dogs in our care experience. We are thankful to our many foster parents who help by temporarily taking pets out of the shelter and into their homes,” she added.
