A man faces felony grand theft charges after stealing a golf cart from a Coconut Creek apartment complex, drunkenly crashing it into a median, then fleeing the scene.
On August 7, the Coconut Creek Police Department responded to the Windsor Apartments of Coconut Creek in response to an alleged theft, joyride, and subsequent crash of a clubhouse golf cart.
According to the police report, the property manager of Windsor Apartments reported the theft of an EZ-GO golf cart from the premises, telling officers that video footage showed a black male described as wearing a white shirt and jeans as the suspect.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers spotted a person, later identified as Trevor Dorsey, 42, of Coconut Creek, matching the suspect’s description walking near the location in the vicinity of Winston Park Plaza.
Arrest records show officers could immediately tell Dorsey was heavily intoxicated. Upon taking him into custody, witnesses, including a maintenance worker for Windsor Apartments, identified Dorsey as the man that attempted to drive away in a golf cart owned by the property’s management company.
According to the maintenance worker’s account to officers, Dorsey initially tried to operate a golf cart that was not running but managed to gain access to another operational golf cart and drove it away from the community’s clubhouse.
As Dorsey attempted to escape, he drove the cart over a curb and into a center median, becoming lodged among the bushes. Records of the accident show the impact of the crash resulted in the windshield of the golf cart being broken off.
In the aftermath of the crash, Dorsey fled the scene on foot when police spotted him and took him into custody.
The property manager estimated the cost of the damaged golf cart to be around $10,000.
Dorsey was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $1,000 bond.
