Alex Gamage signs to play college football at Alabama A&M. {Piper Football}
Piper High School added another college football signee from this year’s team as defensive back Alex Gammage officially committed to Alabama A&M University.
He joins Jahmani Chin-Suer, who signed in December with Florida International University.
“It feels unreal to be able to play college football because I know it’s not easy to make it this far,” Gammage said. “I couldn’t do it alone, and it’s truly a blessing.”
Gammage began playing football at age 6, competing with the West Miramar Patriots and the Pembroke Pines Optimist Bengals before starting his high school career at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. He eventually finished his career at Piper, where he established himself as one of the top defensive backs in Broward County.
As a senior, Gammage recorded six interceptions and added two fumble recoveries, consistently making game-changing plays for the Bengals’ defense.
“Alex is a very cerebral football player,” Piper Head Coach Quentin Short said. “He’s a high-character young man, top 10 percent in his class, and made big plays throughout his three-year career at Piper. He was the best player on the field week in and week out. He is the standard when it comes to being a student-athlete.”
Including All-Star games and the Kickoff Classic, Gammage totaled 10 interceptions and was named Defensive MVP of the Broward County North/South All-Star Game. He also earned First Team All-County honors and was a part of 23 wins and four playoff games
When it came time to choose a college, Gammage said Alabama A&M stood out because of the coaching staff’s confidence in him and their understanding of his goals.
“Alabama A&M felt like an amazing home and a great place to be, with a culture I want to be a part of,” Gammage said.
As he prepares for the next level, Gammage is focused on improving every aspect of his game, particularly his man-to-man coverage, as he aims to become a versatile defensive back capable of excelling in both man and zone schemes. He is set to join a college team that has four wins. a season ago.
