Coral Spring Charter baseball had a pair of players announce their college commitments.
Julien Spinola is headed to Eastern University and called his commitment one of the best moments of his life.
“It felt really good that I knew I was going to continue playing the sport, and it felt like a big weight lifted off my shoulders,” Spinola said.
Spinola started playing baseball when he was around nine and knew he wanted to pursue it since that day. He called it the best thing that ever happened to him and played with the Banditos, South Florida Giants, and CBU. He played his first varsity baseball game last year and had 60 at-bats while recording five RBIs and a double.
He felt Eastern University was the perfect fit for college, with a beautiful campus and a great coaching staff.
They help me with the process the whole time and have been recruiting me for a while,” Spinola said. “They also play at a good conference, so it’s pretty good competition.”
Spinola, however, plans to improve his strength and speed before playing at the next level for a team that won 20 games last season.
Enzo Gurgel will play at La Salle University and credits his parents for all the sacrifices they made for Gurgel to reach this pin.
“It is truly a great feeling,” Gurgel said. “It’s a dream that I’ve had ever since I started playing this sport,” Gurgel said. “I’m one step closer to my dreams, and I couldn’t have done it without the people in my life and god.
Gurgel started playing baseball when he was nine. He played recreational baseball in Miami before competing in travel baseball with Barwis Dragons, coached by Jose Piedra, Patrick Grady, and Alex Pepe. On varsity, he won on the mound and pitched to an era of 3.15. He also had three hits and drove in four runs while scoring four runs
For college, Gurgel says he committed to LaSalle because Coach Miller and Coach Anderson gave him an opportunity he did not believe he would get after having Tommy John surgery.
“The school is well known in the field of study I want to go into, which was another reason I gravitated towards LaSalle,” Gurgel added. “The environment in Philadelphia is like nothing else I’ve experienced, and I’m so excited to start my journey there.”
Gurgel hopes to make mechanical adjustments and get back into that “baller” state of mind before playing for a team that won 32 games last year. Before that, Gurgel and Spinola are set to begin their spring season with a new coach, Alvaro Gomez.
At the high school level, CSC won 15 games before falling in Regionals to the eventual State Champions in North Broward Prep. After this year, Spinola will play for a team that went 20-19 a season ago.
