A caregiver is accused of using a 99-year-old Sunrise woman’s debit card without permission to buy an iPhone and bracelet accessories through Apple and Amazon.
According to a Sunrise Police Department arrest report, Karla Giannina Granda Pozada, 47, of Sunrise, was arrested November 4 on charges of grand theft, criminal use of personal identification information, and exploitation of an elderly person.
According to an arrest report, the investigation began November 3 when the woman’s son reported suspicious transactions on his mother’s bank statements. He told officers he believed Granda Pozada, who worked as his mother’s caretaker, had used her banking information without permission.
The son provided investigators with bank statements highlighting transactions dated June 20 through October 6. Police listed the reported unauthorized purchases at $2,414.64.
The charges included purchases through Apple and Amazon, along with two automobile insurance payments. The son told police that neither he nor his mother owned a vehicle, both primarily used flip phones, and neither regularly purchased items through Amazon.
He also recalled seeing Granda Pozada speaking on the telephone at the residence while attempting to obtain insurance for a vehicle she had recently purchased.
During a recorded statement, the woman told police she had allowed Granda Pozada to use her debit card to order items for her through Amazon because she did not have an account. She said she had not authorized the caregiver to make personal purchases and wanted to pursue criminal charges.
Officers returned to the residence on November 4 after arranging to speak with Granda Pozada when she arrived to sign her final work form.
According to the report, Granda Pozada voluntarily showed officers purchase information on her phone. Investigators said an Amazon order matched a September 18 charge.
Granda Pozada also admitted using the card without permission to buy an iPhone as a gift for her son, according to the report. When asked whether she intentionally used the woman’s banking information for her own benefit, Granda Pozada acknowledged it and said she was sorry, investigators said.
Investigators arrested Granda Pozada and took her to the Broward County Main Jail.
