Man Makes 45 Calls to Police to Free Jailed Wife, Threatens to Shoot Officer, Ends Up Behind Bars Too

A Sunrise man was arrested after allegedly making over 40 threatening phone calls to law enforcement officers following the arrest of his wife, including a final threat of shooting and killing an officer, which led to his arrest. 

According to a Sunrise Police Department incident report, Danial Anthony Schmidt, 57, was taken into custody on October 29 and charged with threatening a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence.

The report states that Schmidt’s wife had been recently arrested for domestic battery. In the hours following her arrest, Schmidt allegedly called Broward Sheriff’s Office dispatch 45 times, asking about her whereabouts and how to secure her release. 

Despite being repeatedly told the proper procedure and given the correct phone numbers to work on the release of his wife, the report says Schmidt, described as “noticeably intoxicated, argumentative, and aggressive,” continued calling dispatch throughout the night.

A Sunrise Police Sergeant who had previously spoken with Schmidt during the domestic battery investigation reported that he called Schmidt in an attempt to prevent further harassment of dispatch. During that call, Schmidt allegedly told Zinn, “I tried to be polite, but you and I are going to have problems.” 

When given multiple chances to backtrack on his threats, Schmidt reportedly upped his hostility and stated that he was “going to put a bullet in the officer’s head.”

After the alleged threat, officers went to Schmidt’s house to arrest him. When they attempted to take him into custody, the report says Schmidt resisted, forcing officers to call additional units to complete the arrest, particularly because he had threatened to use a firearm in the past.

Schmidt was arrested and transported to Westside Regional Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Broward County Main Jail.
