Kanhai Wilson {BSO}
A man is facing murder charges after Sunrise police say he fatally shot a 70-year-old amputee in a wheelchair.
According to the Sunrise Police Department, officers responded around 12:18 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the area of Sunrise Lakes Boulevard near Pine Island Road and Oakland Park Boulevard.
When officers arrived, they discovered 70-year-old Winston Murphy dead at the scene. Investigators later revealed that Murphy was an amputee who used a wheelchair.
Police identified the suspect as Kanhai Wilson, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, who authorities said fled following the shooting. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and Sunrise Police worked together to locate Wilson and take him into custody in Dania Beach.
Wilson has been charged with murder with a dangerous, depraved mind without premeditation, as well as fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest.
Authorities said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police have not yet released additional details about what led to the shooting or the relationship between the suspect and the victim. The investigation remains active.
Wilson was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is currently held without bond.
