Coral Springs High School Drama Presents ‘In the Heights’ {courtesy}

On Tuesday evening, Broward Center for the Performing Arts held the 21st annual Critics’ Awards Program, or Cappies, celebrating outstanding achievement in high school theater.
Nominees from 21 schools in Broward and Palm Beach competed for the awards in 47 categories, recognizing performers, designers, technicians, publicists, and critics. Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Cappies Awards featured songs and scenes from the top-nominated shows.
Coral Springs High School’s production of In the Heights took home seven Cappies for props, lighting, sets, vocalist in a male role, lead actor in a female role in a musical, song, and musical.
Although in the lead for the most nominations at 21, Marjory Stoneman Douglas won in two categories, including creativity and lead actor in a male role in a musical.
J.P. Taravella won Featured Actor in a Female Role in a Play for its production of Radium Girls.

Votes from students determined the Cappies winners through a weighted peer-review voting process. Student critics make nominations from participating schools who attend productions at rival schools and write reviews, which are then edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com.
