Coconut Creek property owners will see a millage rate increase in the upcoming year.
During a September 12 special meeting for the budget, the commission approved a millage rate of 6.8988 on the first reading, an increase from last year’s rate of 6.4463.
According to city manager Sheila Rose, this increase is necessary to pay for a new fire station, extensive renovations, an addition to the police headquarters, and significant infrastructure for MainStreet at Coconut Creek.
The total budget is about $222 million, and the proposed general fund is $131,719,000.
According to Rose, the city expects to spend about $39 million on improvements to the police station and about $28 million on a new fire station.
According to Rose, Coconut Creek last had a property tax increase in 2018, when the city had to fund a separation from the Margate fire department and transition to Coral Springs dispatch.
The final reading for the budget will take place on September 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the commission chambers.
