Broward Health celebrated the opening of the Broward Health Sunrise Emergency Room with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the city’s first freestanding emergency department and expanding access to emergency care for residents in western Broward County.
The new facility, located at 9001 W. Oakland Park Blvd., is Broward Health’s second freestanding emergency room to open in June. Earlier this month, the health system opened a similar facility in Lighthouse Point as part of its effort to bring emergency medical care closer to communities throughout Broward County.
The 18,000-square-foot facility provides the same level of care as a hospital-based emergency department while offering the convenience of a neighborhood location.
“Broward Health continues to make significant investments in the health and well-being of our community,” said Broward Health President and CEO Shane Strum. “Sunrise has long been considered a medical desert, lacking necessary medical services for the residents who call Sunrise home. Not anymore. We are providing the residents of Sunrise and neighboring communities with convenient access to advanced emergency care and the trusted expertise of the Broward Health team close to home.”
The emergency room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is licensed to treat both adults and children. It features 15 private exam rooms, dedicated resuscitation rooms, and advanced diagnostic imaging services, including X-ray and CT scans for pediatric and adult patients.
Patients requiring hospitalization or specialized treatment will be transferred to Broward Health’s network of hospitals and specialty providers. The health system expects the facility to treat nearly 15,000 emergency patients each year.
The project is also expected to generate more than $10.8 million in economic activity while creating dozens of full-time jobs.
Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan said the facility addresses a growing need for emergency healthcare services in the city.
“As Sunrise continues to grow, expanding access to emergency healthcare is essential,” Ryan said. “This new Broward Health Sunrise ER ensures our residents and neighboring communities have convenient access to high-quality emergency care when they need it most. We are grateful for Broward Health’s investment in our city and the positive impact it will have for years to come.”
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, elected officials and community leaders toured the new facility, which features advanced medical technology and a patient-centered design.
According to Broward Health, freestanding emergency departments have become increasingly popular as communities seek faster access to emergency services. The health system noted that Sunrise is projected to grow by approximately 1.5% over the next five years.
“The Broward Health Sunrise ER reflects our commitment to meeting patients where they are and ensuring they have access to high-quality emergency care when every minute matters,” said Manny Linares, CEO of Broward Health Medical Center, the licensed hospital partner for the facility. “This new emergency room not only improves access to care. It also strengthens the seamless continuity of care Broward Health provides across our entire healthcare system.”
The Sunrise emergency room is part of a broader expansion of Broward Health’s services across the county. The health system is developing five new medical centers and several major projects, including a 12,000-square-foot freestanding emergency room at Holiday Park adjacent to the YMCA Family Center in Fort Lauderdale. That project, developed in partnership with the city, is scheduled for completion in 2027 and will combine emergency medical services with community health and wellness programming.
The Sunrise facility was designed by HKS Architects, built by Skanska and developed with Concord Healthcare Development serving as the owner’s representative.
Broward Health officials said the projects represent a significant investment in expanding access to healthcare, enhancing medical technology and meeting the needs of Broward County’s growing population.
